Education Department FAQ’s

1. What does the Education Department do?

The Education Department is dedicated to educating the public on the Kitsap Humane Society mission, and several Animal Care/Welfare issues. Topics include Pet Care, Bite Prevention, Overpopulation and Disaster Preparedness.

2. What age groups do you reach?

We have a variety of lesson plans that can be adapted for all ages from preschool to adult and all in between. See our list of lesson plans.

3. How can we schedule a classroom visit?

We will come to your school, childcare center or organizational meeting to discuss the Kitsap Humane Society or other topics. If requested, our humane educator can be accompanied by an animal assistant, most often a cat or dog. Classroom visits take place Tuesday – Friday, 10:00am – 4:00pm. If you would like to schedule a classroom visit, please call (360)692-6977 x119.

4. Can we get a tour of the shelter?

Yes! We offer shelter tours to all groups. Tours take about 30 minutes to complete and are offered Tuesday – Friday, 10:30am – 4:00pm. If interested, Shelter tours can be combined with a lesson, taught in our Humane Education Classroom.

5. How much do these classes cost?

Nothing. We understand your budgets are limited, and therefore provide this service for FREE. If your students would like to support our efforts, dog and cat food, clean towels and blankets, newspapers and spare change are all needed and welcome donations. See our Wish List for a complete list of KHS shelter needs.

6. I’m a teacher. How do these lessons fit into our curriculum?

Our lessons fulfill Washington RCW 28A.230.020 requirements which state, “All common schools shall give instruction in…science with special reference to the environment, and such other studies…All teachers shall stress the importance of…the fundamentals principals of honesty, honor…and the worth of kindness to all living creatures.”

“Teaching the child not to step on the caterpillar is as valuable to the child as it is the caterpillar.”
