How long does the microchip last?
The microchip has no power supply, battery, or moving parts. It is designed with an operating life of over 25 years and is guaranteed for the life of the animal. Once injected, the microchip is anchored in place as a thin layer of connective tissue forms around it. The chip requires no care. It does not pass through or out of the body.

Who is qualified to inject the microchip?
Microchips go into the animal by way of standard injection. Those familiar with the delivery systems for vaccines and regular shots will have no problem injecting the chip. Complete step-by-step instructions are included with all products. In all states you are legally allowed to inject your own animals. If you are considering microchipping for others, you must check with your State Veterinarian's office for rules that apply in your state.

Why should I microchip puppies or kittens that I sell?
Any puppy or kitten sold to a private owner or pet store should be microchipped to protect it against loss, theft or separation from its owner. In addition, microchips installed at the kennel level also protect the breeder, simplify management and solve problems with confusion of puppies. Can any microchip be read by any type of scanner?
Not all chips are created equal as far as readability! It is important to choose a microchip that offers you the best readability by all scanners in the United States. This is crucial if you are microchipping pets that will belong to others. AVID microchips are the most cross compatible in the industry being more widely read than any other. They operate at 125 kHz, the American standard of care for many years. Read more >>

Does the procedure hurt the animal?
Although the microchip needle is larger than a typical vaccine needle, animals do not over react to it. Anesthesia is not required or recommended. The AVID chip is biocompatible and has a special coating called Parylene C that helps it stay in place.

Are the individual microchips that I purchase registered to me?
Our customers order their chips in groups or Lots, not by individual number. We record and register the Lot Numbers to our customers upon purchase. This is a free service we provide for your backup as proof of purchase.
This is NOT the same as registering an individual pet in a 24-hour recovery service. If you sell pets, or if grown animals are sold or moved, it is essential that the pet and his chip number be registered in PETtrac.

Should my buyers register their newly microchipped pet in their name?
Yes. You should make sure that the unique microchip number you have provided for your customer gets registered in the 24-Hour recovery network with the new owners contact information. Your customers will want their pet enrolled in PETtrac, the global 24 hour database used by shelters and anyone finding a lost pet. See our PrePaid Enrollments.

As a breeder, will I be contacted if pets that I sell end up in a shelter?
If the pet is registered with the PETtrac™ Recovery Network, the shelter will be given the owner and alternate contact names. If you are the breeder and want to be contacted first if any of your pets are ever in a shelter, consider enrolling yourself as the primary or alternate contact in PETtrac. If you are the breeder, please call us for more info...800.434.2843.
